Conquering Pebble's Postage Stamp

By custom·December 27, 2025

As a Top 100 golf coach, I've seen countless golfers, from weekend warriors to tour pros, stand on the tee of Pebble Beach's 7th hole, that tiny, exposed par-3 perched dramatically above the Pacific. It's a hole that looks deceptively simple, yet it's a true test of nerve and execution. Nicknamed "Postage Stamp" for its diminutive green, the 7th can make or break a round. Here's how to play it like a pro:

Understanding the Challenge:

Before we talk strategy, let's acknowledge the unique challenges of this hole. First, the wind. It's almost always a factor, swirling and shifting, making club selection crucial. Second, the green. It's small and slopes severely from back to front, making holding the green with anything but a perfectly struck shot a real challenge. Third, the pressure. You're playing one of the most famous holes in golf, often with spectators watching. Nerves can play a significant role.

Club Selection is King:

This is where many golfers make their first mistake. They overthink it. The key is to keep it simple. Most of the time, you'll be hitting a wedge or a short iron. Resist the urge to try and muscle a longer club. Focus on finding the club that allows you to make a smooth, controlled swing. Pay close attention to the wind. If it's blowing left to right, you might need to aim well left of the pin. If it's into you, take an extra club. If it's downwind, take one less. Don't be afraid to ask your caddie or playing partners for their opinion on the wind.

The Swing Thought:

Forget about hitting it hard. Smooth and controlled is the name of the game here. Visualize your shot before you step up to the tee. See the ball flying straight and landing softly on the green. Trust your swing and commit to the shot. A good swing thought is to focus on your rhythm and tempo. Keep your shoulders turning and your hands relaxed.

Aiming for Success:

The green at the 7th is small, but it's not impossible to hit. The key is to aim for the center of the green. Even if the pin is tucked behind a bunker, don't try to get too cute. A two-putt par is a great score on this hole. If the wind is really howling, aim for the fat part of the green, even if it means leaving yourself a long putt. Better to be on the green than in a bunker or the Pacific Ocean.

Embrace the Challenge:

The 7th at Pebble Beach is a daunting hole, but it's also one of the most rewarding. Embrace the challenge and enjoy the experience. Don't let the pressure get to you. Take a deep breath, trust your swing, and enjoy the moment. Even if you don't hit the perfect shot, you're playing one of the most iconic holes in golf.

Post-Round Analysis:

After your round, take a moment to reflect on your shot at the 7th. What did you do well? What could you have done better? Use this experience to learn and improve your game. The next time you play the 7th, you'll be even better prepared.

The 7th at Pebble Beach is a hole that will test your skills and your nerves. But with the right strategy and a little bit of luck, you can conquer this iconic par-3 and add your name to the list of golfers who have tamed the Postage Stamp.
