Exploring the Many Walking Paths of Bucks County
Summer is a perfect time to get out and explore some of the area's most scenic walking and biking trails of Bucks and surrounding areas.
Take your kids and take your family, but don’t leave grandma out! There are so many amazing trails where families and friends can ride bikes, mom’s push babies in strollers, amateur photographers snap pics of birds and flowers, and walkers stroll at a slow pace taking in all of nature's beauty.
I first discovered these amazing trails while I was going through cancer treatment in 2017. I was stuck in the house a lot, and longed to get outdoors no matter what the weather. My husband and I began researching walking and biking trails close to our home in Doylestown, to get me the fresh air and nature’s whisper of inspiration I desperately needed. We began incorporating light leisurely bike rides locally into our daily routine and eventually expanded further out.
We located some incredible walking and biking trails all along nearby canals and waterways, discovering a treasure trove of spectacular paths in Bucks County.
This started our quest for visiting historical mills, biking down old railway lines, seeking out new walking trails, and hiking through woods. We loved finding ruins of manufacturing buildings and old mills that once made all the textiles for our local community. This became my husband’s and my new passion, taking our focus off of present cancer and chemo’s hardships, and turning it into a Bucks history lesson combined with exercise while getting fit.
Here are some of our favorite walking/biking trails, and worth every effort to load up bikes, water bottles, and a few snacks for the journey. Once you try immersing yourself in nature in some of these most beautiful natural spaces in our area, you will wish you knew of these gems sooner!
Delaware State Park Canal & Thompson Neely House on River Road: incredible biking/walking trails along the river, taking you into New Hope, Frenchtown, and many other scenic spots north on the trail.
Delaware Canal: travel this path for miles, starting at New Hope to as far as you like. Pass towns like Easton, parts of Philadelphia, & it connects to the Lehigh River Canal trail. Continue further to the breath-taking Pocono mountains.
Aquatong Spring Park: in New Hope, this is a great walking park in nature
Peace Valley Park: lovely trails around the lake, beautiful views
Pennypack Trail, Huntingdon Valley PA: a magnificent trail and one of our personal favorites! Enjoy exploring the lush wooded forests that line the paved paths, past streams and sounds of flowing water over brooks, and take the long route straight to the gorgeous Lorimer Park. The trail is long, extraordinary, and an absolute must do!
John Paul Park at Lower Nike: in Chalfont, a small but lovely place to walk
Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park trail, Lambertville NJ
Jim Thorpe: It may be far, but so well worth it! Ride in an old steam train or grab a shuttle to the top of the mountain and bike down. Walkers can walk as much as they want at the base of the mountain. It's a magnificent one of a kind experience!
