Spring Clearing with Rose Knows Where it Goes
As the Founder and CEO of Rose Knows Where it Goes LLC, Rose Prendergast Miller enjoys a high level of popularity and is sought after by numerous individuals and organizations in the area. She serves as an organizer expert for various media outlets, including ABC, Fox, and CBS. While her availability is typically booked at least two months in advance, I can attest from personal experience that the wait is well worth it.
Between an extensive kitchen renovation, my mother’s passing and a ton of stress and grief, my home had become full of clutter. Every time I tried to attack it, the overwhelm would take over and I would begin and end each day with a feeling of defeat and heartache. I was in a maddening dilemma of craving an uncluttered home and being too consumed with anxiety to get it done.
I had heard about Rose Knows Where it Goes some time ago. I would often look at her website, imagining what it would be like to hire her. Finally, I made the call.
As soon as we spoke, I knew Rose would live up to her reputation. The ease in which I was able to express myself, her non-judgmental tone and sincerity helped me immediately relax. Rose told me her goal is to teach others how to take control of their lives and feel joy in their space. She feels she was born to help and be a healer. She confidently told me this would be a life changing experience and I hung up feeling hopeful.
When the day arrived, my living room, which had once stored everything from my now-extinct dining room, was in order within about four hours. The space was peaceful and still. The internal weight I had been carrying was finally gone. It was a beautiful experience and one I wanted to write about, so I sat down with Rose after her visit to get more insight from her.
As a former teacher, Rose’s gentle approach was exactly what I needed. “My most favorite client is the one who needs me the most. My clients succeed because I teach them how to make this a lifestyle and have a mindset shift. Clutter is a learned behavior, and learning how to clear it is a muscle memory. A person doesn’t want to have their possessions posses them. It’s not about the stuff. Its about detaching from it and not buying things to fill a void; only keep things that you love and find resourceful.”
Rose also emphasized experiences over stuff. “You will never have to declutter your experiences. The experiences are what help you through your hard times, the stuff just clogs you. People work all day long and they want to come home to a sanctuary space. You want to come home to a place you seek and love.
“What serves you? Does your stuff serve you? A lot of times your stuff is from previous chapters in your life. Life is ever evolving so our stuff needs to be too. We need to loosen the grips of who we were. For example if you have beautiful suits from when you used to work but never wear them anymore, why do you hold on to them? Or if you used to bake all of the time but now you go to a bakery, ask yourself, ‘why am I holding on to this stuff? Because it was who I was?’ A lot of seniors especially struggle with this, especially if they know they are facing some of their final chapters in life. Life is ever evolving and so is our stuff.”
“There’s no shame in the game”, Rose continued. “It’s why I am honest about having ADHD. It is okay to talk about things and grow because of what you go through. You don’t want to stay stuck in your trials and tribulations. The goal is to turn our wounds in to wisdom.”
The root of clutter isn’t always about procrastination but the emotional and financial attachment behind it. Some things I was holding on to were items I felt like I should keep, and not that I truly wanted to. Rose helped me to decipher what enriched me and what was holding me down and because of that I have opened myself up to a richer life experience at my home and beyond.
The result? Peace. I’ve even been able to continue the process and am gradually getting each room in order. I give this experience give five(thousand) stars.
Rose’s services include paid presentations for corporations, seminars for seniors, home staging, decluttering, wardrobe editing, hoarding, senior downsizing, move management, professional organizing, redesign and chronic disorganization coaching.
