For three consecutive weekends in October (3-4, 10-11, 17-18), the historic streets of Jim Thorpe and the surrounding mountains will once again provide the backdrop for one of Pennsylvania’s most anticipated autumn celebrations - the 2026 Fall Foliage Festival.
Visitors to town will be invited to experience the sights, sounds, aromas and flavors pertaining to autumn, in the historically significant Carbon County community where local businesses, live entertainment, food vendors and local establishments, arts, crafts and outdoor adventures come together to provide a quintessential Pocono Mountains experience enhanced by nature’s seasonal spectacle. Many activities will be taking place throughout downtown and the surrounding areas, sponsored and coordinated by the Jim Thorpe Tourism Agency (JTTA). There is no entry fee for the Jim Thorpe Fall Foliage Festival, however, some attractions may have fees.
Considered the busiest time of the year to come here, detailed information about parking is posted on www.poconomountains.com/jim-thorpe/parking/ Hence, plan to arrive early in the morning if you hope to park on the street, or in the Carbon County Parking Lot (at 1 Susquehanna Street, next to the train station), or at the Immaculate Conception Church (at 178 West Broadway near the Old Jail). Pre-paid, reserved parking spots are available at Mauch Chunk Lake Park offered on weekends with a shuttle between 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. in 15-minute intervals. The Sam Miller Field Weekend Shuttle-Parking drops off & picks up passengers at 10 Hill Road next to the Opera House. Also in October, free parking is offered by Pocono Whitewater Rafting & Pocono Biking with a shuttle service at the cost of $5 round trip. Children under 5 ride free. Fall is a special time in Jim Thorpe, enjoy your stay here - is a message with which the local community symbolically welcomes visitors each year as they arrive from throughout Pennsylvania, and beyond. Known for its charming narrow streets winding their way up hills, and historic architecture of an era gone by, Jim Thorpe’s location amid the picturesque Pocono Mountains and the Lehigh Gorge has created a much coveted natural destination for vacations, especially in the fall.
Here, a small-town charm (with its vibrant downtown core full of shops, restaurants, art galleries and fun attractions), meets the beauty of nature as colorful foliage sweeps through the land emphasized by picturesque mountainous vistas; all creating a showpiece of timeless beauty for visitors in October.
The early days of October can bring the first signs of changing colors, while subsequent weekends offer more opportunities to explore the intensity of changing foliage as the season progresses and cools off. So, when planning a trip to specifically enjoy the phenomenon of autumn leaves, we encourage to monitor local conditions, because the timing and intensity of colors varies from year to year, depending on how cold the nights might get.
One of the major attractions for the whole family during the Fall Foliage Festival is the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway experience. This narrated out-and-back trip follows the boundary of the majestic Lehigh River, over bridges and into the Lehigh Gorge State Park. Comfortable, refurbished vintage coaches (built as early as 1917) are pulled by diesel engines along a route that changes with the seasons, and offers an opportunity to view the autumn landscape from the rails. https://www.lgsry.com/autumn-leaf-2026
You can discover and explore Jim Thorpe aboard the open-air nostalgic Trolley Tours, offering a fully narrated journey that highlights the history of the borough and the area’s natural beauty. On Saturday afternoons, the Jim Thorpe Trolley offers Wine-and-Suds Tours that include three to four stops at local wineries, plus Ghost and Gravestone Tours. https://jimthorpetrolley.com/historic-trolley-tour/
The three-weekend Fall Foliage Festival event offers flexibility and provides the opportunity to experience Jim Thorpe beyond its seasonal colors. Merchants and restaurateurs on Broadway and Race streets welcome visitors with seasonal food and drink specials that complement the fall atmosphere.
Unique art galleries such as The Anita Shapolsky Art Foundation, Studio YNW, The Stabin Museum, Black Diamond Gallery, etc. add yet another dimension to a fun-filled day, spent in a community often enticing visitors to return multiple times to experience different aspects of the festival. Encounter a magical journey in Wonderland on Broadway Escape Room and travel into the world of Alice in this 1 hour experience for figuring out the clues (in groups of 2-4 guests); this family friendly venue is for patrons 8 years of age and up (must be accompanied by an adult).
Live street music will again be part of the event, with four hard to miss music performing locations. JTTA officials are expected to provide additional information about the performers and locations as the event approaches; check Instagram at #VisitJimThorpePA or Facebook page Jim Thorpe, PA Visitor Information.
The historic Mauch Chunk Opera House (14 W Broadway) offers an intimate concert theater with seating for around 400. The superb acoustics and state-of-the-art sound system make this Opera House one of the premier live music venues in Northeast PA, and offers performance year-round from national touring musical acts to tribute bands, burlesque, festivals, and everything in between. October at the Opera House features: Nyke & Friends, The Badlees, Ten - Pearl Jam Tribute, Beginnings - A Celebration of the music of Chicago, the Velvet Stardust Rock Show, and the Grand Slambovian Halloween Ball.
In the evening, you could also catch a show at nearby Penn’s Peak https://www.pennspeak.com/events/all.
This October, the Ballroom at the Mauch Chunk Museum & Cultural Center (at 41 W Broadway) transforms into a delightfully haunted playground “Spooktacular,” a whimsical Halloween celebration filled with circus thrills, comedy, music, and delightful surprises for the entire family. This colorful, laugh-filled variety show celebrates everything we love about the season blending Broadway-style entertainment with world-class circus artistry in an intimate Victorian setting.
Jim Thorpe’s Historic Buildings are an important part of the getaway experience:
A) Observe the historic buildings on Broadway (aka, the Millionaires’ Row) reflecting the wealth and sophistication of the 19th century industrialist millionaires who lived in Carbon County during the coal-mining boom.
B) Explore St. Mark’s & St. John’s Church known for the Tiffany stained-glass windows and hand-craved French limestone Reredos. A most notable Gothic Revival church in Pennsylvania, and now a National Historic Landmark, was designed by Richard Upjohn and built in 1869.
C) Take a tour of the Asa Packer Mansion, the home of philanthropist, railroad magnate and founder of Lehigh University, Asa Packer. Built over a cast iron frame by Philadelphia architect, Samuel Sloan in 1861, the home consists of 3 stories, 18 rooms and approximately 11,000 square feet of living space.
D) Tour the Old Jail Museum and wander the cold hallways. Get a glimpse of the mysterious handprint still on the wall in Cell #17 or stand under the gallows on which seven of the accused Molly Maguires miners were executed by hanging.
E) Explore the Mauch Chunk Museum and discover how Pennsylvania’s landscape was forever changed by coal mining, industrial waterways and railroads. View marvelous industrial relics from the Victorian golden age.
F) Stroll down Race Street, known for its charming mid 19th-century European style townhomes, the historic Stone Row, built by Asa Packer to house his workers and craftsmen.
Last but not least, engage in Ghost Walks to enjoy intriguing tales of reported ghoulish encounters and stories of historic hunted properties along Broadway and West Broadway! The one-mile, round trip walk, begins at the Inn at Jim Thorpe (24 Broadway).
The return of widely popular Jim Thorpe Fall Foliage Festival is here! Enjoy this season like no other and we hope you have a wonderful time. Thank you for visiting our town, and for your kind patronage!
