Documentation without Research I have a 12-inch settling spot in my yard along a water drainage route. There are several, in fact. The appraiser documented a spot as a sinkhole. I sent him the Oxford definition of this term, as well as the complete published definition by the state in which he is licensed. I proposed that he either confirm the spot as a sinkhole according to the definition, which would require further in-person evaluation by a ground expert, or call it a settling spot. His response was to email a nonscientific definition from another dictionary and a short phrase from a stat
