Estate Sale Companies
When a household becomes a sale: downsizing, estates, and clean-outs.
How estate sales work
An estate sale company prices, stages, advertises, and runs the sale of a household's contents, usually over a weekend, for a commission of the proceeds. Families call after a death, a downsizing, or a move; buyers come for everything from furniture to tools.
There is no license for this work in Pennsylvania, so vet on references, insurance, and the contract: the commission rate, how items are priced, what happens to what does not sell, and whether a final clean-out is included.
For shoppers: sales typically run Friday through Sunday with discounts deepening by the last day. Cash still rules at many, lines form early for good sales, and everything is sold as-is.

Running estate sales well
- 1No PA license applies; insurance and a clear written contract are the credentials
- 2Spell out the commission, what happens to unsold items, and the cleanout terms
- 3Pricing knowledge is the product: antiques, tools, and the things families miss
- 4References from recent sales are the only vetting that matters; offer them unprompted
