Senior Living
Assisted living, nursing care, retirement and 55+ communities, and memory care.
Choosing senior living, level by level
The levels matter more than the brochures: 55+ communities are independent homes with age rules; personal care and assisted living add daily help; nursing homes add skilled medical care; memory care secures and staffs for dementia. Most families shop two levels at once, today’s and next year’s.
In Pennsylvania the licenses split: the Department of Human Services licenses personal care homes and assisted living residences, while the Department of Health licenses and inspects nursing homes, and those inspection results are public. Medicare’s Care Compare scores every nursing home; check it before any tour.
On the tour, ask about staffing ratios on nights and weekends, what triggers a move to the next level of care, and exactly what the monthly rate excludes. Each county’s Area Agency on Aging gives free guidance and handles complaints; they are the call to make when you feel stuck.
